After running a SeaTools test SeaTools' PASS or FAIL is the standard that Seagate uses to determine whether a hard drive is still in good working order or is failing. A drive may be failing but continue to function normally for a short time, so SeaTools is often a better judge of whether the hard drive is failing than the drive's functionality at any given moment. Therefore, if SeaTools indicates that the drive is failing, Seagate recommends backing up your data immediately and replacing your drive. Each new design incorporates improvements that increase the accuracy of the SMART prediction. As a matter of policy, Seagate does not publish attributes and thresholds. Please remember that these third-party programs do not have proprietary access to Seagate hard disk information, and therefore often provide inconsistent and inaccurate results. Back to the top If the drive is detected in the BIOS Since the drive is detected in the BIOS but has stopped booting correctly, the culprit may be faulty cabling. Replace the power cable and the data cable for the drive in question with cables that are known to be in good working order. If the problem persists, the most likely culprit may be a corrupted operating system. In this case, a repair Windows may be necessary. Important If your data is backed up elsewhere and you don't need data recovery, please proceed with the instructions to repair Windows. Warning This will very probably erase all data on the drive. Insert and boot from your Windows install disc to perform a Windows Repair/Restore. You should therefore, attempt to erase the drive and reinstall the operating system. The simplest way to reinstall the operating system and probably erase the data, though that does not happen every time is to insert the Windows CD/DVD in the CD/DVD drive and then reboot the computer. The option to repair Windows should appear as well as an option to reinstall Windows. Since the repair has failed, simply choose to reinstall Windows. If that fails to reinstall Windows, a stronger erase is probably required. Seagate's utility SeaTools Bootable can perform a quick, a timed, or an Overwrite full erasure known as a "zero-fill" of the drive. In this case, a full zero-fill is probably the best option. This can take many hours depending on many factors, including the drive capacity, so leave adequate time for this. If you are short on time, attempt a timed zero-fill of at least a few minutes. Then insert the Windows CD/DVD in the CD/DVD drive and then reboot the computer. You should be able to install Windows as if from scratch. Back to the top When the storage drive is no longer detected If a Serial ATA drive, installed as additional storage in your computer, was previously detected but is no longer detected, this set of troubleshooting steps will attempt to get the drive detected again, or to conclude whether the drive has failed and should be replaced. Disk 1 or Disk 2 may be the additional storage drive. If the drive is detected there and the coloured bar to the right is still dark blue see figure, follow the steps to Reset the Drive Letter. If the drive is not detected in the lower window of Disk Management at all, please check the BIOS. If your drive is detected there but the coloured bar is black see figure or some other colour, this means that the partition has become lost. Lost Partition A black bar in Disk Management means that the partition has become lost. At this point, we must ensure the safety of your data. Is the data on this drive backed up elsewhere, or do you need to try to recover it? If you were unable to access the data, please contact Seagate Support for assistance in recovering your data. If you have data saved elsewhere, proceed with the diagnostics and reformat instructions. Diagnostics and Reformat Since the data is backed up, or you do not need it, we can proceed to diagnostics and reformatting the drive. Warning Formatting the drive will erase all the data on the drive. Perform a diagnostic on the drive with SeaTools Bootable. See Document ID 007843 for instructions. Reset the Drive Letter If the drive is no longer detected in My Computer/This PC or Windows File Explorer, but it is displaying a blue bar in Disk Management, Windows has probably lost track of the drive letter. Please follow these steps Attempt to perform a checkdisk action on the drive. See Document ID 184611 for instructions. Remove any potential conflicts Power down the computer. Disconnect all other storage devices, external hard drives, thumb drives, printers and cameras. Power the computer up again and retry detection. If the drive is detected properly, add the disconnected devices one by one until you find the one that is causing the problem. First of all, often, users want to install a new drive in order to upgrade to a larger hard drive in their computer. This usually means that the user wants to copy all the data from the older hard drive to the newer drive, then install the newer drive as the bootable drive. To upgrade to a new drive, copying your data from the old drive to a new one, see Document ID 007717. Install Windows Motherboard Compatibility Format the Drive Install Windows If you are simply going to install a new copy of Windows the operating system, you first need to format and partition the drive, and then install Windows Disconnect all external storage devices such as USB, FireWire, and eSATA drives, jump/thumb/flash drives, cameras, and printers before proceeding with a Windows repair or recovery. Failure to disconnect such devices could result in serious data corruption. Insert your Windows installation CD/DVD into the CD/DVD drive of your computer. Power down the computer. Install the drive physically into the computer. Boot up the computer. The Windows installation process should begin, as the computer boots from the installation CD/DVD. Follow the guidance of the installation program. It will take you through a process of several steps, including partitioning and formatting the drive. You can choose the default setting - one big partition - or choose to partition the drive into multiple different partitions, as you prefer. It will then install Windows. Once it is complete, it will most probably ask you to remove the CD/DVD and reboot the computer. Once this is done, you should be able to boot into Windows, and the install is complete. If you correctly installed the drive and it is not detected in the BIOS, please check motherboard age . Back to the top Motherboard Compatibility Some older computer motherboards are unable to support modern Serial ATA drives. If your motherboard only supports SATA1 Gbits/sec transfer rate and you are installing a SATA2 Gbits/sec or SATA3 Gbits/sec drive, the motherboard may not detect the drive. There are four options in that case Obtain an add-on controller card that can support more modern drives and connect the drive to that card. For Barracuda drives and older, as well as certain Barracuda models You can place a jumper on the drive to slow it down to Gbits/sec, so older motherboards can support it. Use an older drive. Update your computer equipment or obtain a newer computer. Please make sure if your computer does support SATA2 Gbits/sec drives at least. Check your system documentation for an explanation of system beep codes. If a drive failure is possible, it is always important to make an immediate backup. Maka dari itu, paling tidak tetap beri waktu istirahat agar komponen seperti hardisk tidak terlalu panas. 3. Instalasi yang Berlebihan Instalasi perangkat lunak maupun instalasi sistem operasi jika dilakukan secara berlebihan atau terlalu sering, maka akan berdampak tidak baik. Karena, ketika proses instalasi berjalan, hardisk akan bekerja lebih berat daripada biasanya. Pokoknya, semua hal jika dilakukan secara berlebihan, pasti akan memiliki efek yang tidak baik. 4. Perangkat Sering Mati Mendadak Ketika perangkat komputer atau laptop mati mendadak, maka semua komponen didalamnya juga akan berhenti bekerja, termasuk hardisk. Hardisk yang cara kerjanya adalah dengan berputar, tiba-tiba berhenti seketika dan itu bukan hal yang wajar. Hardisk butuh waktu untuk menghentikan pekerjaannya. 5. Sering Terjatuh Komponen paling penting dalam hardisk adalah disk atau cakram. Ketika hardisk sering jatuh, biasanya ada hal-hal aneh yang terjadi. Salah satunya adalah hardisk tidak mau terbaca, dan parahnya bisa juga terjadi kerusakan pada hardisk. Maka dari itu, berhati-hatilah ketika membawa hardisk, terutama hardisk external. 6. Usia Hardisk Hardisk juga memiliki jangka waktu penggunaan. Jika sudah waktunya diganti, biasanya hardisk akan memberikan tanda-tanda seperti laptop sering hang, laptop menjadi lemot, lama ketika menyimpan data, dan lain sebagainya. 7. MFT atau FAT Corrupting Sistem file yang sering digunakan oleh pengguna windows yaitu NTFS dan FAT. Dan MFT sendiri berperan penting sebagai penyimpan file. Sehingga saat MFT mengalami kerusakan maka system NTFS hardisk eksternal tidak akan terbaca. 8. Infeksi Virus Kenapa hardisk eksternal tidak terbaca juga bisa disebabkan oleh infeksi virus? Bagi Anda yang sering browsing di internet untuk mencari data pekerja atau hanya sekadar mencari hiburan harus waspada dan berhati-hati. Terlebih jika Anda sering mendownload dari situs yang tidak terpercaya disarankan anti virus harus selalu update. Karena di dunia internet terkadang banyak masalah yang bisa timbul karena dunia maya mempunyai kebebasan tersendiri. Salah satunya yakni adanya virus yang menginfeksi laptop atau komputer Anda tanpa sadar yang bisa menyebabkan kerusakan pada partisi computer. 9. USB Drives Are Not Safely Removed From PC Kasus ini biasanya terjadi saat Anda akan mengeluarkan hardisk eksternal. Keadaan ini yang mengharuskan kita untuk mencabut USB Drive pada computer secara paksa. Pencabutan paksa inilah yang akan menjadikan file system pada hardisk mengalami corrupt atau kerusakan. Hardisk Eksternal Tidak Terbaca Drive External baik berupa USB Flash maupun hardisk eksternal umumnya mudah digunakan. Namun dalam beberapa kasus, saat Anda menghubungkan drive pada computer atau pada perangkat lain mendapati bahwa Anda tidak menemukan hardware tersebut. Saat menggunakan USB drive External, mungkin Anda pernah mendapati pemberitahuan pesan “File or directoy is corrupted and unreadable”. Bahkan, pesan tersebut mengarahkan untuk memformat hardisk tersebut. Untuk mengatasi hal tersebut, inilah cara memperbaiki hardisk eksternal yang tidak terbaca dan minta format untuk Anda coba. Cara 1 Dengan CHKDSK Anda bisa klik di pencarian dan ketik CMDSetelah itu Anda bisa klik kanan pada command prompt, lalu klik Run as administrator. Di halaman command prompt yang sudah muncul, Anda bisa mengetik chkdsk/f e dan tekan enter. Ingat, ganti E menjadi tempat partisi hardisk yang akan diperbaiki. Tunggu sampai perintah chkdsk selesai, setelah itu keluarkan hardisk dan Anda bisa mencolokkan kembali hardisk tersebut pada computer atau laptop Anda. Sebenarnya langkah di atas hanya untuk melakukan check saja. Namun, biasanya akan memancing hardisk agar terdetaksi jika permasalahannya bukan bad sector. Cara 2 Dengan Sofware Minitool Partition Wizard menjadi salah satu tool terbaik yang bisa Anda manfaatkan sebagai cara mengatasi hardisk eksternal tidak terbaca. Setelah mengunduh aplikasi tersebut Anda bisa menginstalnya terlebih minitool dan cari lokasi hardisk lalu klik kanan pada hardisk yang mau di delete hati-hati, jangan sampai salah pilih partisi klik Delete All Partitions untuk menghapus hardisk. Pada Partition Management, silahkan klik Create Partition dan ganti file yang tadinya NTFS menjadi FAT32 dan klik OK. Tunggu hingga minitool partition untuk menyelesaikan semua langkah selesai Anda bisa membuka hardisk yang tadinya tidak terbaca pada my computer. Ketika Anda menggunakan cara di atas, maka sudah bisa dipastikan semua data hardisk akan hilang karena yang dilakukan adalah menghapus semua partisi hardisk eksternal. Kerusakan pada hardisk sebenarnya bermacam-macam. Namun, sebagian besar kerusakannya adalah hardisk bad sector. Hardisk bad sector terbagi menjadi dua, yaitu bad sector logic dan bad sector fisik. Apa sih itu? Bad sector logic adalah kerusakan hardisk yang disebabkan karena faktor pemakaian atau bisa juga terinfeksi virus. Sedangkan bad sector fisik adalah kerusakan hardisk yang disebabkan karena komponen pada hardisk mengalami kerusakan. Nah, dalam hal ini, yang bisa diperbaiki sendiri adalah hardisk bad sector logic saja ya. Karena kita tidak tahu apakah hardisk kita mengalami bad sector logic atau bad sector fisik, maka kita bisa langsung mencoba memperbaiki menggunakan sebuah software yaitu Low Level Format bisa diunduh di Google. Perhatian Ketika menggunakan cara ini, maka hardisk Anda akan bersih total. Jadi, hardisk Anda akan diformat dan data-datanya akan hilang. Sebelumnya, silahkan install terlebih dahulu software Low Level Format yang sudah diunduh. Jika sudah, silahkan simak langkah memperbaiki hardisk rusak karena bad sector. Nah, ketika sudah mengikuti langkah di atas namun hardisk masih tidak bisa digunakan, maka kemungkinan besar hardisk tersebut mengalami bad sector fisik. Jalan satu-satunya adalah membawanya ke tempat service hardisk. Oleh karena itu, saya sarankan untuk membawa hardisk Anda ke tempat service yang terpercaya. Kalau perlu, lakukan pencarian terlebih dahulu tentang tempatnya, lihat bagaimana review yang diberikan oleh pelanggannya. Mengatasi internal hardisk tidak terbaca karena bad sector Hdsentinel Bad sector merupakan kondisi di mana ada bagian yang tidak dapat diakses oleh sistem. Biasanya, masalah ini disebabkan oleh kegagalan atau kerusakan sistem operasi ketika mengaksesnya. Untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut, Sedulur bisa coba cara seperti berikut ini. Di halaman utama Windows, buka Windows Explorer, atau Sedulur bisa menekan kombinasi tombol “Win + E”. Setelah itu, klik kanan pada partisi hardisk dan pilih “Properties”. Klik pada tab “Tools”, kemudian pilih “Check Now”, lalu klik “Start”. Apabila Sedulur ingin membersihkan hardisk dari bad sector, maka pilih opsi “Defragment Now”. Selain itu, fitur Defragment juga dapat diakses dengan cara, klik “Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter”. 2. Mengatasi internal hardisk tidak terbaca BIOS WinPoin Jika Sedulur mempunyai komputer rakitan atau baru saja mengganti hardisk di laptop, biasanya akan muncul kendala berupa hardisk yang tidak bisa dibaca oleh sistem atau BIOS. Ada banyak hal yang dapat menyebabkan masalah ini. Misalnya saja seperti kabel hardisk tidak terpasang dengan baik, tidak ada tegangan yang masuk ke dalam hardisk, dan juga hardisk tidak didudukan pada bagian motherboard dengan benar. Apabila pada saat menyalakan komputer muncul pesan berupa “Hard Disk Diagnosis Fail” atau “HDD Controller Failure”, maka coba periksa kabel hardisk yang menghubungkannya dengan motherboard. Apakah kabel tersebut sudah dipasang dengan benar atau belum. Selain itu, periksa juga bagian Jumper Master, Slave, serta Cable Select. Biasanya jika belum terpasang atau salah pasang akan membuat HDD tidak terbaca BIOS. Kemudian jangan lupa pula untuk mengecek BIOS, lalu atur ulang hardisk yang Sedulur gunakan. 3. Mengatasi internal hardisk tidak terbaca dari disk error Gadgetmilenial Sedulur bisa memperbaiki HDD dengan memeriksa kesalahan dengan menjalankan perintah “CHKDSK” di CMD Command Prompt. Mengatasi partisi hardisk tidak terbaca Senimantkj Bisa dibilang ini adalah masalah yang hampir sama seperti sebelumnya, yakni partisi HDD yang tidak bisa terbaca. Nah, jika Sedulur sudah mencoba cara sebelumnya namun masih gagal, cobalah cara yang ada di bawah ini. Klik kanan logo Windows, kemudian buka menu “Computer Management”. Pilih “Disk Management”, klik kanan pada partisi yang tidak muncul. Setelah itu, pilih opsi “Change Driver Letter & Paths”. Klik “Change”, pilihlah partisi yang bermasalah dengan mengklik pada huruf di bagian kanan. Klik “Ok”, lalu “Ok” lagi. Terakhir buka File Explorer, maka partisi yang hilang akan kembali. Nantinya akan muncul halaman Computer Management. Nah, Sedulur dapat melakukan format ulang drive, namun semua data akan terhapus. 7. Mengganti kabel USB hardisk eksternal Jakartanotebook Penyebab data di dalam hardisk eksternal tidak terbaca itu bisa karena kabel USB-nya yang bermasalah. Perlu untuk Sedulur ketahui, bahwa ada dua jenis kabel USB yang dipakai pada hardisk eksternal. Jenis kabel USB tersebut adalah USB to USB atau male, dan juga USB Tipe-C yang ukurannya lebih tebal. Kabel USB yang rusak dapat mengganggu daya listrik serta transfer data. Hal inilah yang menyebabkan data tidak bisa dibaca. Untuk itu, coba ganti kabel USB pada HDD eksternal Sedulur. 8. Membawa hardisk ke tempat reparasi Pintarkomputer Untuk yang satu ini berlaku untuk hardisk internal maupun harddisk eksternal. Ya, masalah pada HDD ini bisa terjadi karena adanya masalah pada bagian hardware di dalam perangkat hardisk tersebut.
